Our Relationship With Our Phones

Smartphone Addiction

Have you heard of nomophobia? Probably not. I haven’t heard of it until I found it used on a CNN article on the dangers of smartphone addiction. Nomophobia is an abbreviated term for “NO MObile PHOne phoBIA.” According to CNN, it’s “a 21st-century term” to indicate fear of not being able to use a cell phone or other smart device.

smartphone addiction

A statistic from 2016 revealed that millennials check their phones over 150 times per day. Perhaps its due to the fear of missing out aka FOMO that has people glued to their screens. It could also be the release of dopamine, the main chemical of pleasure, that people get from likes on social media posts.

“Young people are interacting all day but almost entirely through a screen,” Priceonomics says. While there are dozens of articles calling teens out on their smartphone usage, we wonder if adults are just as addicted as their younger counterparts.

Email Addiction

Priceonomics sheds light upon “adults’ email addiction”– an addiction to checking your email wherever you are. The following chart by GFI highlights the events where adults have admitted to checking their emails.

Could you imagine checking your email while you’re in labour? That’s a scary thought.

FOMO

Why are people supposedly obsessed with checking emails?

Nowadays, it isn’t just an email addiction anymore. Adults are increasingly getting addicted to social media. Why? Monetization. Marketers are turning to Facebook, Instagram, etc., and recruiters to LinkedIn. Once using social media tools became profitable, businesses have flocked to it like a moth to a flame. Now, you’ll find positions such as social media manager or freelance social media specialist–jobs that haven’t existed until the 21st century.

Curious about your relationship with your smartphone? Take this simple quiz and find out!

How Addicted Are You?

iPhones have recently updated to give you a rundown of your screen time and your average time spent on your phone. Have you checked your recent average? How would you describe the relationship with your phone?

Let’s look at the answers to the last episode first.

…all over the surface of the red planet…

…there’s no accepted evidence of microbial life…

I guess you already got the correct answers.

Practice for today. Tears In Heaven is a song by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings. Eric wrote this song in memory of his four-year-old son, who fell from a New York apartment building in 1991.

The audio version is given below:

Please ENJOY IT. And the question goes to two blanks in the script below.

[Script]

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven…
Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?
I’ll find my way
Through night and day
‘Cause I know I just can’t stay
Here in heaven…
Time can bring you down,
Time can ??? (1 word missing) your knees
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please…
Begging please
Beyond the door there’s
??? (1 word missing) I’m sure
And I know there’ll be no more
Tears in heaven…
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on
‘Cause I know I don’t belong
Here in heaven…

[Listening] Is There Life On Mars?

mars-1326108_960_720

Let’s look at the answer to the last [Listening] episode first.

Facebook’s engineers first noticed…

It’s temporarily shut down…

I guess many of you got the correct answers!

Here comes the practice for today. It’s a piece of news about Mars from BBC.

Please LISTEN PATIENTLY. And the question goes to two words I have blanked in the script below.

[Script]

It’s a question that’s excited scientists since the dawn of the space age. And right now, there are orbiters, landers, roving vehicles all over the surface of the red planet, analyzing it. And right now, there are orbiters, landers, roving vehicles all over the ???(one word missing) of the red planet, analyzing it. But it’s still an open question how habitable is our celestial neighbor and what, if anything, could have inhabited it?

Here are four key moments in the search to answer that question. In 1976, NASA’s ‘Viking’ lander, was the first mission to look for microbial life in soil samples it grabbed from Mar’s surface. It didn’t find evidence of even the simplest, organic molecule.  Since then, some members of the Viking team have questioned whether they missed something in that initial analysis. But to this day, there’s no accepted ???(one word missing) of microbial life on Mars.

In July of 1996, NASA scientists announced the discovery of fossils of bacterial life in meteorites that they found in Antarctica—meteorites from Mars that had crashed into our planet12,000 years ago. After huge, initial excitement, NASA said that after two years of continuing to study that meteorites, those initial lines of evidence simply went away.

But to this day, there are still scientists who maintain that initial analysis was valid. Both NASA’s ‘Curiosity’ rover and the European Space Agency’s orbiter have detected whiffs of the gas methane on Mars. Now that’s tantalizing because on Earth, the vast majority of methane comes from microbial life. so future Martian missions have set their sights on detecting exactly where that gas is coming from.

Most recently, and possibly most excitingly, researchers have found the first evidence of an existing body of liquid water on Mars. It was found using radar and this is a sub-glacial lake under the southern polar ice cap of the red planet.

[Listening] Facebook’s 50 Million Account Was Invaded.

pexels-photo-267399

Let’s look at the answer to the last [Song] episode first.

Right as they dimmed out all the lights

Could be brave or just insane

Cause maybe in that sleepy town

I guess many of you got the correct answers!

Here comes the practice for today. It’s a piece of news about Facebook from CNN.

Please LISTEN PATIENTLY. And the question goes to two words I have blanked in the script below.

[Script]

Facebook is trying to figure out how to deal with its worst hack ever. The company says a security issue has affected almost 50 million accounts.

Facebook’s ???(one word missing) first noticed something unusual on September 16. It took them 11 days after that to stop it. The hack involved a vulnerability in Facebook’s code. Something in the sites’ “View As” feature, which lets users see what their Facebook profile looks like to someone else. It allowed hackers to steal digital keys that could be used to take over people’s accounts.

What has Facebook done about it? It’s ???(one word missing) shut down the “View As” feature, and it’s reset the digital keys of the nearly 50 million accounts affected, plus 40 million additional accounts.

What we don’t know is what the hackers wanted, how long they had access to people’s information and whether they took any of it. Best-case scenario, the hackers might not have realized what they did; they might not have actually stolen any info. Or if they did, they don’t plan to do anything with it. Worst-case scenario, they could use the info to blackmail people. They could post user’s private messages and pictures online for the world to see or they could use the information to try to influence events like future elections. Again, experts don’t know what or if there’ll be consequences to the hack.

The audio version is given below:

Please LISTEN PATIENTLY. And the question goes to three blanks in the script below.

[Script]

Oh, Mickey, you’re so fine
You’re so fine, you blow my mind
Hey Mickey, Hey Mickey,
Oh, Mickey, you’re so fine,

You’re so fine and you’re ??? (1 word missing).

I’ll be yours till the end of time
Cause you make me feel
Yeah, you make me feel
So shiny and new
Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time

Like the one in me
That’s okay
Let’s see how you do it
Put up your dukes
Let’s get down to it
Hit me with your best shot
Why don’t you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
Fire away

Na Na Na
Come on
Na Na Na Na Na
Come on, come on, come on
Cause I may be bad
But I’m perfectly good at it
Sex in the air
I don’t care I love the smell of it
Sticks and stones may break my bones
But chains and whips excite me
Cause I may be bad
But I’m perfectly good at it

Sex baby
Let’s talk about you and me
Let’s talk about all the good things
And the bad things that may be
Let’s talk about sex
Alright
Let’s talk about sex
A little bit, a little bit
Let’s talk about sex, baby

Baby, all through the night
I’ll make love to you
Like you want me too
And I

And I guess its just the woman in you
That ??? (2 words missing) the man in me
I know I can’t help myself
You’re all in the world to me
It feels like the first time
It feels like the very first time
It feels like the first time

It’s going down, fade the Blackstreet
The homies got RB collab’ creations
Bump like acne, no doubt
I put it down, never slouch
As long as my credit could vouch
A dog couldn’t catch me, straight up

Tell me who could stop when
Dre making moves
Attracting honey like a magnet
Giving ’em eargasms with my mellow accent
Still moving the flavor with the homies
Blackstreet and Teddy
The original rump shakers

Shorty get down, good Lord
Baby got them open up all over town
Strictly biz she don’t ??? (2 words missing)
Cover much ground, got game by the pound

Getting paid is a forte
Each and every day true player way
I can’t get her outta my mind
I think about the girl all the time

I like the way you work it
No diggity, I got to bag it up
Baby

I like the way you work it,
No diggity, I got to bag it up
Baby,

I like the way you work it
No diggity, I got to bag it up
Baby

I like the way you work it
No diggity, I got to bag it up

I like the way you work it
No diggity, I got to bag it up
Babe

I like the way you work it
No diggity, I got to bag it up
We out!
