💡Time for [Word-ology] again, a column making English learning easier!💡
Before today’s learning, let’s check the answers to the last episode.
Definition: to officially leave an organization of states, countries, etc. and become independent
Definition: to achieve a high position, especially to become king or queen
The Latin root word gress means “step, move“.
In the word “progress“, “pro” means “forward” and “gress” means “step, move“. When you’ve made a lot of progress on a project, you’ve really “stepped forward” on it.
Congress is a “stepping” together of elected officials who run our nation. If you are aggressive, you “step” towards someone with hostility. Sometimes aggressive people can overstep their boundaries and transgress upon another’s rights, or “step” across a line that should not be crossed.
Now it’s your time to figure out the meanings of the following words!
Example: Let me digress for a moment and tell you a short story.
Example: Some children may regress to an earlier stage of development.
That’s all for [Word-ology] today!
