[Best Pick] 5 Types Of Jokes In English

Hey guys! Welcome back to [Best Pick]!

If you are learning a language, learning jokes in that language is one of the barriers you have to break through before you can speak like a native speaker.

Today we’re going to look at 5 different styles of English jokes that often play with word meanings. So, let’s not waste any more time, and… Ready for it?

1. What’s the difference between X and Y?

Example: What’s the difference between mashed potatoes and pea soup? You can mash potatoes, but you can’t pee soup.

“Pea” is a small round green seed, eaten as a vegetable, it’s something you can make soup with. But to “pee” is to pass waste liquid from your body… Well, you know what I mean. These two words sound the same, that’s why it’s funny.

2. What does X have in common with Y?

Example: What does a banana have in common with a million dollars? They both have appeal (a peel).

The peel is the skin of some fruits and vegetables. And if something has appeal, it means that it is attractive, like a million dollars. You get it now?

3. What do you call a/an…?

Example: What do you call a computer that sings? A Dell (Adele).

If you don’t know, Dell is a computer brand and Adele is a famous singer with songs like “Someone Like You” and “Rolling in the Deep”.

ADELE ON A DELL

4. “Why did”, “Why do”, “Why does”, “Why is”, “Why was”, “Why were”

Example: Why was the math book sad? Because it had too many problems.

If you don’t get this joke, math books have questions you have to answer, they have problems you have to figure out. But we can think of the math book as a person, who has many problems that bother him. So they’re just very emotional books πŸ™‚

5. Knock, knock jokes

Example:

A: β€œKnock, knock.”

B: β€œWho’s there?”

A: β€œLettuce.”

B: β€œLettuce who?”

A: β€œLet us in, it’s cold out here.”

β€œLettuce in” sounds like β€œLet us in.” So that’s where the funny part lies.
