[Word-ology] React=Re+Act

Time for [Word-ology] again!

Today, we are going to learn a simple etymon, “act“, the meaning of which you must be very familiar with.

Now, let’s analyze the composition of “react“.

The word consists of two etyma,  “re” meaning “back” and “act“. By combining them together, we can easily deduce the meaning of the word “react“, which is “act back (in response)“.

And it is very easy to find a basic combination between what we deduced and the definition in the Oxford Dictionary, “in response to something“.


The etymon has a variant, “ag“, which is also very common.

To comprehend the variant better, let’s analyze the composition of “agile” containing the etymon.

The word consists of two etyma,  “ag” meaning “act” and “ile” meaning “easy“. By combining them together, we can easily deduce the meaning of the word “agile“, which is “easy to act“.

And it is very easy to find a basic combination between what we deduced and the definition in the Oxford Dictionary, “able to move quickly and easily“.


Now it’s your time to figure out the meanings of the following words.

agent=ag-[act]+ent-[who]

reactionary=re-[back]+act-[act]+ion-[n.]+ary-[adj.]
