Let’s analyze the composition of “accord”.

Accord=ac-[to]+cord-[heart].

1568101766(1)

Apparently, it’s a short word comprising two etyma, “ac” meaning “to (do)” and “cord” meaning “heart”. The connection between etyma and the meaning of the word is not so lucid. Then we need some imagination: if you go to one’s heart, it could mean you agree with someone or your idea matches his or hers, right? Then we are very close to the definition of “accord”, which is “to agree with or match sth“.

So you see, you can build a reasonable situation to better comprehend the word even if the connection between the etyma and the meaning of a word is not so clear.

Now it’s your time to figure out the meanings of the following words

Concord=con-[together]+cord-[heart]

Cardinal=card-[heart]+in+al-[adj]

Discord=dis-[away]+cord-[heart]

That’s all for [Word-ology] today!
