Today, we will learn about the formation of adverbs.
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. In other words, adverbs describe actions or other descriptive words. Let’s learn more about the formation of adverbs.
1. Add ‘ly‘ to an adjective
In most case, an adverb is formed by adding ‘ly’ to an adjective.
2. Adjective ending with ‘y’
If the adjective ends in ‘y’, replace the ‘y’ with ‘i’ and add ‘ly’.
3. Adjective ends in ‘le‘
If the adjective ends in ‘le‘, replace the ‘e‘ with ‘y‘
4. Adjective ends with ‘ic‘
If the adjective ends in ‘ic‘, add ‘ally‘
5. Adverbs have the same form as their adjective
6. ‘Good’ and ‘Well’
The corresponding adverb for the adjective ‘good’ is ‘well’.
Kobe is a good basketball player.
–Kobe plays basketball very well.
