Morehouse College seniors got a surprise Sunday when billionaire investor Robert F. Smith announced during his commencement speech that he would give a gift to the graduating class.

Robert Frederick Smith is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist. A former chemical engineer and investment banker, he is the founder, chairman, and CEO of private equity firm Vista Equity Partners. In 2018, Smith was ranked by Forbes as the 163rd richest person in America.

“On behalf of the eight generations of my family who have been in this country, we’re going to put a little fuel in your bus,” he told the newly minted graduates at the private, all-male, liberal arts, historically black college in Atlanta.

“Let’s make sure every class has the same opportunity going forward. We are enough to ensure we have all the opportunities of the American dream.”He said.

Smith’s amazing gift was met with a standing ovation from the students who turned to each other in disbelief, And then they chanted “MVP!”

He said after the ceremony: “Where you live shouldn’t determine whether you get educated. Where you go to school shouldn’t determine whether you get textbooks.

“The opportunity you access should be determined by the fierceness of your intellect, the courage in your creativity and the grit that allows you to overcome expectations that weren’t set high enough.”

Jonathan Epps, 22, one of the graduates, described it as a “tremendous blessing.”

  • I think, the gift that we should call a “liberation” is a knowledge that we got when we learn in school, also we can treat our self to build a strong grit to learn something new. So we can be a better person and free from ignorance

  • I think Billionaire gave a great chance of higher education in American University to all graduate students which many students can not afford. Perhaps he committed certificates for brilliant students which would greatly help them in their future career. So it is really a liberation gift in its true form to all students.

  • Smith gave them an opportunity to understand what is opportunity? One that will come to everyone, it doesn’t matter wherever he or she are living or going to education Institute. Only thing that how he is gripping it and Utalising the opportunity. That will be his or her turning points for their life. That will give the courage to fulfill more expectations and achieve his goals without struggle. So everyone will be getting opportunity, but how are using it and acting on it, that will give them more opportunities to achieve more good thing. Also it will give opportunities to their surroundings people
