1. in defiance of

Today we are going to learn “in defiance of”. If you do something in defiance of a person, rule, or law, you do it even though you know that you are not allowed to do it.
eg:
(1) North Korea is expected to press ahead with more missile tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions.
(2) Tax reform, in defiance of the odds, upheld the public interest against the special interests.

2. slaughter

Another word is “slaughter”. It means to kill a lot of people in a cruel or violent way.
eg:
(1) Picasso was enraged by the slaughter of innocents and he immediately began work on his composition.
(2) Hundreds of innocent civilians had been slaughtered by government troops.
