2. ransom

Another word is “ransom”. It means an amount of money that is paid to free someone who is held as a prisoner.
eg:
(1) Just because you’re poor, that doesn’t mean you can cross borders and detain people for ransom.
(2) The police caught the man who tried to abduct the boy for ransom.
